ABOUT HERB KĀNE
This lounge is named after famed artist, historian and author, Herbert “Herb” Kawainui Kāne, who was also one of the founding members of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Herb’s career experience spanned numerous fields including advertising art, publishing art, architectural design, painting, writing, and sculpture with a special interest in Hawai‘i and the South Pacific.
Research on Polynesian canoes and voyaging led to his participation as general designer and builder of the sailing canoe Hōkūle‘a, on which he served as its first
captain in 1975. Hōkūle‘a has now made several voyages throughout the Pacific and around the world, navigated without modern instruments.
THE ARTWORK
Herb Kāne’s artwork is well known for expertly depicting the many types of Polynesian and Micronesian sailing canoes that were used on historic voyages. His paintings illustrating the history and culture of the Hawaiian and Polynesian islands are awe-inspiring glimpses into another world.
