    Workshop descriptions

    Hana Kapa Workshop

Come to know the legendary origins of wauke (paper mulberry) and the different types of kapa (bark cloth), including 'ulu (breadfruit), mamaki, and wauke. Experience the Hawaiian art of kapa making by peeling and pounding your own piece.

    Natural Hawaiian Dyes

Uncover the unique array of colors that set Hawai'i apart from other Polynesian islands. Learn about the native plants used for dyes, their myths, traditional uses, and medicinal purposes as you create a vibrant art piece.

    All About Kukui

Delve into the mo'olelo (story) of Lanikaula and the cultural significance of the kukui (candlenut). Choose between land and ocean-based kukui shells to string your own bracelet. Then, learn the technique of collecting kukui nut soot to paint leaf and flower patterns.

    Hau Amazing

Explore the remarkable hau tree, known for producing nine different colors and its use in making ropes and thread. Gain hands-on experience in identifying hau fibers and learn to craft a small, embroidered art piece, ʻOhe Kāpala: Craft your own 'ohe kāpala (bamboo stamp) and learn the symbolism behind traditional Hawaiian patterns. Learn to mix natural pigments from 'ulu (breadfruit) and other sources to create paint, then use your stamp to design a unique art piece.

    ʻOhe Hano Ihu & Pū'ohe

Clean, sand, oil, and practice the Hawaiian nose flute and trumpet. Listen to a mo'olelo (story) associated with these instruments and explore the practical uses of 'ohe (bamboo)

    Kapa Art & Jewelry

Create a beautiful kapa art piece using natural watercolors and bamboo stamps, then craft a pair of earrings or a key chain. Learn the traditional techniques and tools used to process kapa fibers to bring your creative vision to life.
