Hang with the Pros at Outrigger Waikiki’s New Surfers in Residence

Once the exclusive sport of the alii (Hawaiian royalty), surfing is now one of the most popular pastimes in the world. And the beaches of Waikiki are the modern birthplace—from being the spot where surfing was revitalized in the 1900s to its famous south shores where the legendary Duke Kahanamoku first hit the waves growing up.

Today, some of the sport’s top contenders spread the love—and story—of surf on Waikiki as part of beachfront resort Outrigger Waikiki’s new Surfers in Residence program. One part surf-culture, all parts cool, this unique initiative gives travelers the chance to get up close and personal with today’s surf royalty.

    THE LEGEND(S) OF SURF

With Surfers in Residence, you not only get to hang out with the who’s-who of Hawaii (and global) surf stardom—you also get to learn to "hang 10" with them. Hear big-wave tales, learn about the history of “the sport of kings,” and get a free surf lesson from the pros. Or, for more seasoned riders, just grab your board and hit the waves right alongside them.

    GO WITH THE PROS

Past Surfers in Residence include modern-day heroes like:

“Cheater five” innovator Paul Strauch, who popularized the sport’s only noseriding maneuver for big waves.

Surf-influencer icons the Smith Brothers, known as much for their fashion campaigns and oh-so-hip Sunrise Shack as for their slicing waves around the world.

The latest pro-in-residence? Tony Moniz, a 22-year veteran of the Association of Professional Surfing World Tour and favorite local surf-school founder.

    APRES WAVES

The post-surf adventure on Waikiki is as (almost) famous as the waves. Head to Father of Surfing “The Duke’s” namesake hotspot Duke's Waikiki, or to the aforementioned locals-love Sunrise Shack for organic, surf-inspired smoothie bowls and bullet coffee. For happy hour and more, Maui Brewing Company is the perfect stop for a craft-brew toast to catching your first wave.
