Experience ethical elephant encounters at Samui Elephant Haven
Thailand is rich in once-in-a-lifetime activities, and one of the most iconic experiences is seeing elephants up close. Sadly, many elephants (in Thailand and beyond) have been subject to cruel labor in the trekking, entertainment and logging industries. Samui Elephant Haven's mission is to rescue them, give them a place to live peacefully and allow tourists to interact with their rescued elephants safely.
While you won't be able to ride or bathe with the elephants (per Samui Elephant Haven's ethics policy), you'll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with these gentle giants. You're sure to experience plenty of great photo ops, so don't forget your camera!
When should I visit?
Samui Elephant Haven is the only ethical elephant sanctuary in Koh Samui, and it's less than a 20-minute drive from the Outrigger Koh Samui Resort. They offer morning and afternoon tour sessions with a professional guide. Your guide will tell you more about their rescued elephants, ranging from infants to seniors, and their stories. You'll walk through the park with the elephants and observe them taking mud baths, frolicking in the water and generally being playful and entertaining.
Can I feed the elephants?
If you're looking for an even more immersive experience, Samui Elephant Haven also offers visitors the opportunity to help make nutritious rice balls for the elephants. These tasty treats are made from rice, bran, pumpkin and turmeric and are great for elephants of all ages. The Haven offers two daily sessions where kids and adults can attend a short cooking class, make their own rice balls and feed them to some of the elephants.
Is it a full-day excursion?
Visiting the Haven can be an all-day experience if you want it to be! Check out their one-day volunteer program, a small-group opportunity (two to four adults) that includes transportation from the Outrigger Koh Samui Resort plus snacks and meals. During the eight-hour adventure, you'll get a special t-shirt, make food for the elephants, feed them and even get a close-up look at hydrotherapy for the older tenants. For a shorter experience, stick to the guided tours or rice ball-making activities.
