The magic of OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort’s iconic welcome and farewell ceremonies
When you step foot on the stunning island of Fiji, you're embraced by its beauty: sea turtles and reef sharks, crystalline waters and over 1,500 square miles of reef gardens.
And when you step into OUTRIGGER Fiji Beach Resort, you don’t just enter a resort; you’re welcomed into a home-away-from-home haven of Fijian culture.
The warm welcome of 'sevusevu'
Your first experience: the welcome ceremony. Known as 'sevusevu,' this celebration is a heartfelt greeting that sets the stage for your stay.
"The traditional ceremony of 'sevusevu' is conducted when a guest visits a new place. It is a sign of respect, and they are welcomed and embraced as part of our vuvale (family)," says Ben Johnson, CHDM, Area Director of Sales and Marketing at OUTRIGGER Hospitality Group, Fiji Islands.
Guests are treated to the ceremonial presentation of 'yaqona,' a traditional drink crafted from the kava plant, as hosts sing and dance in traditional attire. This creates an inviting atmosphere and signifies deep respect for both guests and the Fijian ancestors.
A Fijian farewell
The final important ritual of your stay, OUTRIGGER Fiji's farewell ceremony, signifies the end of your adventure and the beginning of your lifelong connection to Fiji.
“Farewell ceremonies provide important closure for individuals departing from the resort. They allow us to provide an expression of gratitude, well-wishing, and recognition of the value of our guests to us as a business and the relationship we have forged during their stay at our resort,” says Ben.
During these ceremonies, the poignant melodies of the farewell song ‘Isa Lei’ are sung, facilitating a connection between hosts and guests and evoking feelings of unity and shared memories. Guests often find themselves swept away by the vibrant energy, sharing laughter and joy with their hosts and one another.
Participating in a storied tradition
Our ceremonies are more than a fun celebration; they're anchored in respect for the local culture and reflection of the rich heritage.
Both ceremonies incorporate prayers, blessings, and spiritual rituals that reflect the beliefs and values of Fijian culture, helping to keep the local cultural practices alive.
"We are committed to retaining our authentic and true Fijian experiences at the resort ... Our Fijian communities (Malevu and Korotogo) have shared specific protocols and guidelines that govern how ceremonies should be conducted," says Ben.
These celebrations are grounded in storied traditions and offer an opportunity to experience a deep connection to Fiji's cultural magic.
