How to Teach Kids the Coolness of Coral Conservation

June is World Oceans Month! As the whole planet comes together as a family to raise awareness about the plight of the world's oceans, families can also come together to create a fun, educational month that helps kids learn about conservation. World Ocean Month is an annual reminder of the important role that the world's oceans play in protecting all species.

Scientists predict that 70 to 90 percent of the coral reefs that sustain countless species while also preserving coastal communities will disappear over the next 20 years due to climate change and pollution. Leading sustainability efforts in the hospitality industry, OUTRIGGER has been fighting against these alarming statistics with its OZONE (OUTRIGGER's ZONE) program for years by empowering both hosts and guests to reduce waste and pollution.

And we believe that you're never too young to understand the importance of protecting the oceans. If you're looking for ways to teach kids about the coolness of coral conservation, take a look at some fun activities to plan both at home and during your upcoming Hawaiian experience.

    Gaming

Yes, conservation gaming is a genre. One of the best resources out there is NOAA Games from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Offering games for all age levels, this portal is home to favorites like Kure Waste Chase, Predator Protector and Recycle City.

    Beach Cleanups

There's nothing quite like getting your hands dirty when it comes to getting to know nature. If you are in town with your family this June 26, join OUTRIGGER as we partner with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii to host a collective town beach cleanup. Guests of all ages are invited to enjoy this "sustainable tourism" event that drives home the impact that humans have on the coastline. Simultaneous cleanup efforts will be taking place globally at all OUTRIGGER Resorts.

    Conservation Crafting

An activity like making kai kupe'e bracelets using salvaged fishing ropes and recycled microplastics is an exercise in art mixed with conservation. These bracelets are inspired by the custom sustainable rope artwork being created for the resort by a famed marine scientist and artist Ethan Estess. This June, guests staying at OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort and OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beach Resort are invited to show up to create their own sustainable and cultural kai kupe'e bracelets made from salvaged materials every Thursday and Saturday through the end of the month.

    Pop-Up Reefs

While Waikīkī Aquarium is presently closed to visitors, the learning goes on with help from intimate pop-up aquarium experiences going on here at OUTRIGGER throughout the month of June. These educational pop-up experiences are offered on alternating Mondays throughout June. Make sure to inquire about how to reserve your spot!

    Coral Kids Club at OUTRIGGER

The Coral Kids Club is an experience offered for guests between the ages of 3 and 12 staying at select OUTRIGGER properties. Under the supervision of trained hosts, youngsters participate in cultural and educational activities focused on themes like local culture, conservation and marine life. This is an amazing experience that allows kids to "fall in love with the ocean" while having fun with peers.

    Lead by Example

Keep the coral reefs on your mind throughout June with educational, inspiring events that raise awareness here at OUTRIGGER. While we're dedicated to protecting our oceans all year long, we like to go "all-out" during June to raise awareness about conservation in the hopes that our guests will return home from their stays with conservationist hearts. Adults looking to participate in conservation efforts during World Oceans Month can enjoy many activities, ranging from shopping for eco-friendly swimwear at the resort shop to sipping cocktails that help fund conservation organizations.
