Matt Bauer - Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger - family visit Back to all stories

Beachcomber Original spotlight: Matt Bauer (+ family)

The Waikiki Beachcomber is known as one of the top Waikiki hotels for its ideal location on Waikiki Beach, its great service—and as you probably know by now, art.

Conceptualized in 2018, The Beachcomber Originals are a carefully curated group of twelve creative artisans whose talents range from photography and music to design and beer-making. Their contribution to the stunning new incarnation of Waikiki Beachcomber? Iconic underwater surf shots by prolific photographer, Zak Noyle, a 64-foot vibrant mural by print artist Margo Ray, the relaxed beats of acclaimed musician Makana.

Another of the Beachcomber Originals, the talented photographer, creative director, surfer and entrepreneur Matt Bauer has made his mark on the hotel, too. Ever since he was a teenager learning to surf on the East Coast, Bauer's call has been to the water. Coupled with his love for photography and passion for storytelling, Bauer uses photography to share his thoughts and feelings—and his Instagram account showcases his style: minimalistic, muted images show everything from inviting blue waters and haunting landscapes to surfers in action and, of course, plenty of surfboards.

In his partnership with Waikiki Beachcomber, Bauer, well, unleashed his creativity not only in photoshoots where he captured the essence and aloha of Waikiki Beachcomber, but also during the process of the resort's refurbishment, where he even helped inspire both the look and feel of the hotel itself. Bauer is also the brainchild behind creating the original Waikiki Vibes.

From being the Online Editor at Skateboarder Magazine and Surfing Magazine before moving on to the world of digital marketing for Rip Curl, digital brand marketing for Nike, and finally co-founding a creative agency, Rosewood, this Los Angeles-based creative's unique creative outlook and laid-back surf style continue to make him a cool creative partner for Waikiki Beachcomber. Plus, it doesn't hurt that his family is the absolute cutest.

Another of Waikiki Beachcomber's ongoing art series, Terrace of Modern Art (TOMA) also helps keep alive the creative vibes of The Beachcomber Originals crew and beyond via a rotating program featuring local artworks around the hotel. Featuring everything from talked-about artworks on the outdoor pool terrace to a talk-story series and aqua-photography sessions, this monthly art series has become part of the Waikiki nightlife scene—making Waikiki Beachcomber one of the best (read: coolest) hotels in Waikiki.

So, what are you waiting for? Book your stay in Waikiki.
